What is Amitabha Journal?
Amitabha Journal is a non-profit app for nianfo — reciting the name of Amitabha Buddha — on iOS and Android. It has a mala bead counter, chanting along with a Dharma Master's recording, a listen-only mode, focus sessions, dedication of merit, practice stats, and practice squads. Quiet and unadorned, with no ads and no in-app purchases, it simply keeps you company as you recite "Namo Amitabha."
Wasn't this app called Mituoji?
Yes. Mituoji is the romanized Chinese name (弥陀记, "Amitabha record"). In English the app is now called Amitabha Journal, following the way English-speaking Pure Land communities speak of Amitabha Buddha. It is the same app, and your records carry over.
Does it work on iPad and tablets?
Yes. iPad and Android tablets get a dedicated large-screen layout with side navigation and wider pages, and once you sign in your records sync with your phone.
Is Amitabha Journal free? Any ads?
It's free, with no ads and no in-app purchases. Every feature is free on iOS and Android, with no pop-ups or interruptions.
How does Amitabha Journal count recitations?
On the Practice tab, tap the on-screen beads — each tap counts one recitation, with gentle haptics and a wooden-fish sound. You can also play a recording under Chant Along and recite with it; each round is counted automatically.
What's the difference between Listen and Chant Along?
Chant Along counts automatically as you recite with the recording — good for a set daily practice. Listen simply plays the Buddha's name for long stretches without counting or interruption — while working, walking, or falling asleep.
Will I lose my records if I change phones?
No. Sign in to your account and your recitation and dedication records sync across devices — even between iOS and Android. Without an account, records stay on the device (with iCloud backup on iOS).
What if my records haven't synced?
Check, in order: both devices are signed in to the same account and are online. Sync can lag a few minutes; switching the app to the background and back usually triggers one.
What if the daily reminder doesn't fire?
Make sure notifications are allowed in Settings → Notifications → Amitabha, and check whether a Focus or Do Not Disturb mode is on — either will silence reminders.
Are my recitation records uploaded to a server?
Without an account, your records stay on your device (with iCloud backup on iOS) and are never uploaded. Once you sign in, records sync to the cloud for use across devices; if you join a squad, your nickname and counts appear in squad and global rankings. See the Privacy Policy for details.
What are Practice Squads?
A squad is a group of fellow practitioners who keep a daily practice together — create one or join via an invite link, see today's recitations together, encourage one another, and follow the leaderboards. Start from the Squad tab in the app.
